AHMAD Taufiq Murni will be setting his sights on a second major title in a space of a month in the upcoming Brunei Snooker Championship 2017 at the Billiards & Snooker Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex which begins this Sunday.
The top-ranked national cueist, who further cemented his status as the nation’s best after clinching the BCSA National 9-Ball Ranking Challenge Grand Final just a week ago, will be switching to a different discipline in snooker and will be joined by SEA Games compatriot Lee Wei Kok, Alias Rashid and Teo Chee Soon.
Taufiq will be hoping to achieve a rare feat by winning a national pool and snooker title in a single calendar year.
The Brunei number one has been drawn with Mezi Shahnom, Abdullah Halim and Md Anis Azura in Group E while Lim Wei Kok, the Grand Final finalist, has been grouped alongside Redzwan Hasim, Haji Md Hairil and Pengiran Md Basheer in Group G.
Notable snooker players Haji Kamarulzaman and Lim Young Wee will also be in action with a familiar face in the pool circuit Md Airwan Zakaria also vying for supremacy.
The match will be played in a group stage format with the winner awarded two points while a loss equates to a point. However, a player will be awarded no points in a walkover.
The top two players from each group will advance to the pre-quarterfinal stage which will then be a knockout format.
As it is a group of four, two wins of a possible three all but seal the player into the next passage.
The rules of the competition are in accordance with the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA).
