TWO of the country’s national carrier Brunei-bound flights were diverted to neighbouring Kota Kinabalu International Airport due to heavy thunder showers that lasted until midnight a few days ago on Saturday.
In a brief statement to the Bulletin, Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) said that flight BI424 from Singapore and flight BI874 from Kuala Lumpur landed safely in Bandar Seri Begawan after departing Kota Kinabalu at 2.10am and 2.20am just a few short hours from its scheduled landing.
The diversion, it said, was a precautionary measure due to unfavourable conditions at the Brunei International Airport. The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMB) when contacted by the Bulletin explained that horizontal visibility at the time in question, around 10pm, was at one kilometre.
As standard practice, the BDMD issued an advisory to the aviation community half an hour prior to the downpour at the airport that had made its way from Muara moving from east to west.
Last night’s rainfall was recorded at 80.3mm, described as high, compared to the highest daily rainfall recorded in March that stood at 26.1mm.
The downpour lasted about an hour and had gradually improved with time but lightning was still visible.
The weather at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport during that time, he added, was clear.
