THE Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih bin Abdullah, underlined the importance of capacity-building and development in the way military operations in the jungle environment are defined, understood and conducted; and as a driver or catalyst for future research and development efforts on how to optimise technology to support and enhance jungle operations.
He made these comments at the Regional Jungle Warfare Symposium (RJWS) which began Tuesday with an opening ceremony at the Medicina Lines, Seria.
The RJWS, co-hosted by the RBAF and British Forces Brunei (BFB), aims to develop Brunei Darussalam as a Centre of Excellence for Jungle Warfare. Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States of America and Vietnam participated.
The RBAF Commander expressed hope for the symposium to be a beneficial platform towards the enhancement of the ways in which participating countries can share, develop and transfer information and knowledge.
Being held from March 7 – 9, the symposium serves to promote cooperation between the participating nations’ jungle warfare schools and experts such as in the area of information exchange and the sharing of best practices.
The symposium is also an opportunity to identify the future course of cooperation such as in the exchange of instructors and also in developing an observer’s programme.
The symposium will be officially closed by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, Captain (Rtd) Abdul Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar today.
