THE Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC) held a second launching of the Re-educate, Empower and Destigmatise (RED) Leaflet Trail 2017 yesterday, at the McDonald’s Jerudong drive-thru branch, in an effort to raise more awareness on AIDS and HIV.

Presiding over the launch was YB Iswandy bin Ahmad, a member of the Legislative Council (LegCo) and the President of the BDAC.

The event aimed to encourage the society to discuss their role in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness through social media and active discussions.

Willson Rudy Jemut, an intern from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and the co-project manager of the event, said, “During our internship with the BDAC, we learnt that there has been an increase in the number of HIV cases in Brunei.”

Therefore, it is urgent to reach the key population in the country with HIV awareness messages that include methods of prevention and encouraging testing, he explained.

Billah Hasan, the BDAC’s Secretary of Media and Public Relations said that around 80 of its members and volunteers distributed leaflets among the public.

The BDAC also seeks to educate and empower people living with HIV (PLHIV), as well as reducing the stigma they face, through organising talk sessions and the involvement of private business companies.
