THE Brunei Government views sports as a means to increase the level of fitness in people while also inculcating the spirit of patriotism, discipline and competitiveness among them.
This was stated by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports at a sports meeting attended by 50 national sports associations at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), Berakas yesterday.
Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, Permanent Secretary at the MCYS, members of national sports associations and senior officers of the ministry were also present.
The minister added that developing sports and physical activities is to promote a sense of belonging and unity among people.
“While the main focus of major sporting events is to collect medals, the aim of having the community participate in sports has not been ignored; all parties should work together to achieve this,” said the minister. “Brunei Darussalam has 35 sports facilities, each having helped sports associations to produce active, resilient, high-spirited and competitive citizens.”
The minister also highlighted the need to encourage active participation in sports activities at schools.
“Methods that can be used to encourage active participation in physical activities include empowering a culture of sports through outreach programmes among students across all levels in cooperation with the media,” he added.
