MORE than 170 students from International School Brunei (ISB) participated in the ‘Orienteering Challenge House Competition’ at the Commonwealth Park on Thursday.
Also participating for their respective house teams were His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak ‘Abdul Haseeb bin Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim.
In conjunction with the ISB Year 5’s academic topic on exploration and the orienteering activities learnt during physical education, the 172 Years 5 and 6 students bussed to the Commonwealth Park in teams of four.
With markers of different letters of the alphabet placed at various coordinates throughout the park, students had to find the letters to spell a predetermined list of words. Provided with a compass, each team had to complete the orienteering course within a time limit.
ISB teacher, Jodie Fletton, remarked how “fulfilling the activity was for the students, who were able to reap the benefits of classroom knowledge in a real-life situation”. Fletton also said that activities like this “allow students to understand the importance of teamwork, as those groups who fail to work together successfully would have difficulty finishing the course”.
