BRUNEI Darussalam national cyclist Azmi Abdul Hadzid emerged winner in the elite and under-23 category of the Porsche Survivor Series Criterium 2017 in the Tutong District after recording a time of 1:11:59.309 yesterday.
The 2.3km per lap race, divided into four categories namely the elite & under-23, master, veteran and novice, ended and started along the vicinity of the Tutong Community Hall.
The national cyclist nudged national team-mate Abd Hadrie Morsidi to second place who recorded a time of 1:11:59.893 in a swap from the previous leg while Mohammad Radzi Tamat settled for third place with a time of 1:12:00.695.
Azmi has been in inspiring form this year after triumphing in the men’s elite open of the Miri International Century Ride and the Pusat Ehsan Walk, Run and Cycle with Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam his year.
The cyclist upgraded his second place finish in the Belait edition of the series when compatriot Abd Hadrie took the title.
“I got second place in Belait but I tried to push and focus for the second series. Finally, I got my result for the first place today,” Azmi said in an interview with the Bulletin.
Azmi is currently preparing for a pre-SEA Games competition which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on May 22 as a probable benchmark for selection in the regional showpiece this August.
“We are aiming for our big race which is the pre-SEA Games so I’m preparing for that.”
The cyclist continued that the Brunei Darussalam representatives will be leaving on May 4 for a competition in Cambodia.
“It is our big aim for the races this year- the pre-SEA Games race in Kuala Lumpur. My aim is to get the benchmark for the SEA Games.”
The Bro Cycling Project rider will also be joined by national team-mate Abd Hadrie, who coincidentally has identical training times as him and Amiruddin, in the overseas competition.
The group of cyclists that could join the duo in Kuala Lumpur include Amiruddin Haji Mohammad Amir, Muhammad Nurjamri Johari and Ahmad Rifa’ie Haji Johor.
Azmi also agreed performance and results as the main requirements to stay in contention for a place in the SEA Games with the regional showpiece only three months away.
Other winners included Pengiran Zaman Pengiran Haji Matasan in the veteran category, Shahnon Haji Basman in the master category and Pengiran Nizem Pengiran Haji Matassan in the novice category.
The Porsche Survivor Series Criterium 2017 will continue in the Temburong district on July 9 and will conclude in the Brunei-Muara district on July 30.
President of Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation, Dato Haji Roni bin Haji Rosli, presented the prizes.
