A TOTAL of 66 exponents from various taekwondo clubs went through the national promotion examinations for their respective black belt levels at the Youth Centre in the capital yesterday.

Thirty-nine of them were assessed for 1st Dan, 19 for 2nd Dan, three for 3rd Dan, one for 4th Dan and four for 5th Dan.

All the participants were evaluated based on their skills in poomsae (patterns), self-defence, kicking techniques, sparring and board breaking.

The board breaking assessment was the final demonstration in the set of criteria whereby participants were required to execute a certain technique to break a board.

The examinations were organised by the Brunei Darussalam Taekwondo Association (BDTA) and conducted by Brunei Darussalam national coach Master Nurul Hannah binti Abdullah Mateen Kim.

BDTA in a statement said it was pleased to see a growing number of youngsters upgrading themselves each year.

“This will also pave the way and create opportunities for more athletes to represent Brunei in various competitions nationally and internationally. They could also be trained for coaching and refereeing,” added the statement.

BDTA will also be organising promotion examinations for coloured belts on May 19- 21 at various taekwondo clubs.
