THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, yesterday morning joined the Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA) walkathon in the heart of the capital together with 600 individuals comprising KACA members and their families as well as volunteer groups. Held at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, the walkathon was organised to commemorate KACA’s 31st anniversary celebration and to support the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative.
The event was also meant to foster closer ties between the participants as well as to instil a culture of concern and help special needs individuals.
The walkathon’s organising chairman and Managing Director of KACA, Haji Abdul Alim bin Haji Awang Othman, expressed, “Building on from today’s event, we are hoping to organise such walkathons once every two years.”
To accommodate more special needs individuals and give them access to better facilities, Haji Abdul Alim also revealed that the centre is hoping to move to a new building within five years. Currently, there are 556 KACA members from all four districts, and several activities are carried out by the organisation, such as the ‘KACA Money Saving Project’, an essay-writing competition and a colouring contest.
Before the start of the walkathon, participants took part in an aerobics warm-up session led by an instructor from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
