A 10-MEMBER group of Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) organised an educational workshop entitled ‘Save Kampong Ayer’, aimed to increase primary school students’ knowledge and awareness of correct waste management practices in Kampong Ayer.
Organised at Haji Tarif Primary School in Kampong Tamoi, its Year 4 and Year 5 students were involved through a series of interactive presentations and activities on topics such as the ‘Impact of Improper Waste Management in Kampong Ayer’ and the ‘3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’.
The project managers, Mohammad Hizaamuddin bin Haji Abdul Haris and Shaima binti Haji Misli, led the initiative after attending YSEALI’s Asean Sea and Earth Advocates (SEA) Camp in the Palawan, Philippines organised early this year.
The Bruneian team was also one of the five member countries from Asean that won a grant sponsored by the US Department of State to implement their environmental projects at their respective home countries.
Hizaamuddin said, “It was encouraging to see that the students involved in the workshop were enthusiastic about preserving the environment. Conservation education should start at a young age, but we observed that support from the older generation is also as equally important in order for any initiatives to be a success.”
At the end of the programme, four eco-prefects were appointed who will lead the school’s current and future environmental activities, ensuring that their peers utilise the provided waste segregation receptacles correctly; report on any improper waste disposal to their supervising teachers and continue raising awareness on correct waste management practice.
