JERUDONG International School (JIS) has successfully reduced the energy consumption of its main block by more than 10 per cent, according to a press release.
In August 2015, the student-led Energy Efficiency Eco-JIS group set itself the target of reducing the energy consumption at the main block of JIS by 10 per cent.
Since then, the target has been met, with the current consumption reduced by 10.4 per cent, through the team efforts of students.
The students began by working with Dr Majid from the Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI), based in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
Employing the techniques taught to them, the students began the process of ‘delamping’, which involves removing unused light bulbs while at the maintaining safe light levels defined by international standards.
Their efforts led to the removal of 843 light bulbs from the school building.
The largest consumer of electricity, however, was the school’s air-conditioning systems. To tackle this, the students made an educational film and designed posters with a new set of guidelines which included setting air-conditioning units at between 22-23 degrees Celsius and ensuring that they were switched off at the end of the school day.
These measures resulted in three days of free electric consumption per month, and the students now plan to extend their work throughout the school.
