BENGKURONG 2.0 emerged champions of the Filipino Basketball Association 22nd Season – Progresif Cup 2017 after beating TLR Brunei Cement in the final at the Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) Batu Bersurat Court last night.
Bengkurong team captain Jerson Mendoza highlighted that they gave their full commitment in the final.
“We gave 100 per cent in our game. We have a good game in the final,” he told the Bulletin after the prize presentation ceremony.
It is the first time that the team has accomplished the title, he said adding that the team was at its most joyous mood.
“This has been one of our happiest moments in our team,” he continued.
Mendoza also praised Rey Molina who coached the team to success.
“He is a good coach. He helped the team out with producing good play,” the captain said of Rey who picked the Best Coach award.
He highlighted the unity of the team with the players living in the same neighbourhood which explained the team’s name.
“We trained for two months in preparation for the tournament. We are one group and we live in Bengkurong,” the team captain asserted.
The champions completed five group matches with a 4-1 win loss record before going to an unbeaten path including the final to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, MGP Brotherhood secured the senior category title at the expense of PLN Construction Sdn Bhd who finished as runners-up.
Kenn Acosta took major individual honours as the recipient of the MVP Season Award while his team-mate Pang Feng Su took the MVP Final award.
Aries Castro took the MVP Season Award and Joel Comeros took the MVP Final Award in the senior category.
Joseph Recato joined Molina in scooping the best coach award in the senior category.
Earlier, there was an exhibition game with the team coached by Walther Ruiz winning 99-90 against a team coached by Mike Nuguid.
