STUDENTS from Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) School of Business are required to register a company by their third year, to ensure they would have their own company to run by the time they graduate.

This initiative was revealed yesterday by Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB, during the welcoming ceremony for UTB’s new intake of 400 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“It is compulsory for business students to register a company by their third year of studies. By the time they graduate, they would then have a job running their own company.

“This initiative was only just introduced this year and it is also open to engineering and science students. You can join together to form a company,” she continued.

The Vice-Chancellor also urged students to take the opportunity to learn and acquire new knowledge, develop skills and enhance personal attributes in profound ways which will help them after university and at a work place.

“Students are also expected to be an independent learner and they must achieve their full potential through good planning, adequate study time, utilising the library and online learning resources,” she added.

Students also need to contribute back to the company, and “at UTB, we have always been responsive to the needs of the community. Students will have ample opportunities to give back to the community and assist the less fortunate,” she said.

She recalled last year where the exco-entreprenuership of the student representative council donated $9,650 to the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans (DANA).

Dr Hajah Zohrah also highlighted the importance of taking part in extracurricular activities.

However, she expressed her disappointment to learn that only a small fraction of UTB’s student body is active in non-academic and leadership activities.

The Vice-Chancellor reminded the new intake on the importance of being an exemplary student and to take in as much knowledge through academic or non-academic activities while at the university.
