A LOCAL man and a Malaysian sustained burn injuries to their face, hand and other parts of their body after a fire broke out in a 24 hour-laundry shop in Haji Harun building, Jalan Pasir Berakas yesterday.
According to a statement from the Fire and Rescue Department, the local Malay, the owner of the shop suffered 35 per cent second degree burns on his face, hand and neck and is currently at Jerudong Park Medical Centre receiving further treatment. The Chinese Malaysian man suffered 45 per cent second degree burns to his face, hand and legs and is receiving treatment at the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Meanwhile, another foreigner who was at the scene during the incident was detained for investigations.
The Fire and Rescue Department received the distress call two minutes past midnight and three fire engines from Lambak Kanan Fire Station and Berakas Fire Station were rushed to the scene.
Led by DSO Haji Mohammad Noor bin Haji Ahad, 16 fire fighters arrived at the scene to find a small fire at the ground floor of the laundry shop and extinguished the fire within three minutes.
Investigation revealed that an explosion had taken place before the fire. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
The Fire and Rescue Department urged members of the public to always comply with the fire safety system like the proper installation of LPG according to standard and carried out by qualified persons from certified companies.
Installation work should be carried out by a qualified (competent) contractor while proper installation and compliance with the standards for safety of the users should be ensured.
Members of the public can contact the emergency line immediately through 995 for the Fire and Rescue Department during an emergency.
