RESIDENTS living near the shoreline at the coastal village of Kampong Danau have become fretful as high tides and waves experienced during the monsoon season are beginning to erode their land areas, most evident in the wearing away of vegetation such as the Ru trees growing along the shore.
According to Acting Village Head of Kampong Danau, Haji Abdullah bin Haji Mohd Tahir, coastal barriers were constructed in the past to prevent coastal erosion at Tanjung Danau and Danau Primary School.
Resident Haji Yunos bin Haji Yakob, whose house was affected by the coastal erosion, experienced his entire storehouse and part of his farm lost to the sea, and the erosion slowly creeping up to his house doorway.
Late last year, some companies and government agencies came together to provide assistance. A coastal barrier has since been constructed to prevent the house from being eaten away by the waves and high tides.
The sea is also slowly but gradually gnawing away at the lands of other residents living near the shoreline of Kampong Danau.
Haji Abdullah urged residents to take extra precautions, especially during the monsoon season to reduce the risk of endangering their lives.
