SOME of the athletes representing Brunei Darussalam in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2017 returned home yesterday and Tuesday night.
Wushu athletes comprising officers, athletes and coaches returned home from Kuala Lumpur to a heroes’ welcome yesterday afternoon and were greeted by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil at the Arrival Hall of the Brunei International Airport.
The wushu team returned home with a haul of one silver medal and a bronze medal. Also present were officers and staff from the Youth and Sports Department, MCYS.
Earlier, 19 members of the Brunei Darussalam Contingent comprising officers, netball, equestrian (endurance) and aquatic (synchronised swim) athletes arrived at midnight on Tuesday. The netball team returned home with a bronze medal.
To greet and present the sash was Haji Amer Hamzah bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Also present were officers and staff from the Youth and Sports Department, MCYS.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Basma Lachkar, owner of the silver medal, said she felt very happy and thankful to the coaches and all who supported her.
“I felt very nervous as it was my first time and just performed my best. I was very surprised when they announced the results, I was shocked and happy all at once. I would love to join the SEA Games again and try my best and achieve better results.
“I hope to get more training and improve more and prepare for more international tournaments,” said the 14-year-old debutante with a smile.
