GRABBING three silvers and one bronze in the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2017, the Lawn Bowl team yesterday returned to Brunei Darussalam to a hero’s welcome at the Brunei International Airport.
On hand to welcome the arrival of the athletes and officials was Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with officials from the ministry as well as family members of the athletes.
The three silvers came from Men’s triples comprised of Ampuan Ahmad bin Ampuan Kasim, Haji Naim bin Brahim and Pengiran Haji Tengah bin Pengiran Haji Tejudin, Women’s Pairs of Dayangku Nurul Nabilah binti Pengiran Md Salleh Chuchu and Esmawandy binti Brahim as well as the Women’s Single from Amaliah binti Matali.
The bronze medal came from Women’s Triples of Hajah Ajijah binti Muntol, Norafizah binti Matossen and Suhana binti Md Daud.
Lokman bin Haji Salleh, Head Coach of Brunei Lawn Bowl team in an interview said, “I am proud of the team for their achievements especially some of the athletes competed in their first SEA Games this time.”
Missing out on gold medals, he stressed the need for athletes to train on the correct techniques as the main area for improvement in order to attain gold medals in the future SEA Games.
Meanwhile Amaliah was disappointed that she could not grab the gold medal from her final at the Women’s Single. She lost to Emma Firyana Saroji of Malaysia with the score of 21-12 She said “I was not at my best when I compete in the competition. I was really nervous. Even a month before the SEA Games, whenever I heard SEA Games I already felt nervous.”
Determined to get the gold medal, Amaliah said “I will train hard and make sure that I bring back the Gold Medal in the Manila SEA Games 2019.”
