BRUNEI Darussalam’s national polo team which featured His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah was awarded the bronze medal during the Victory Ceremony for Polo in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the Putrajaya Equestrian Park yesterday.
The national polo team created history after winning the subsidiary final against Singapore 10-8 to win bronze in their debut despite their rivals winning against them 8-5 in the group stage.
The national team has beaten a Singapore team armed with experience in the competition despite returning from a 10 years hiatus when they were silver medallists.
It was a tense affair during the bronze medal playoff with both sides locked at 3-3 at the end of the first chukka before Brunei extended their lead in the next chukka.
The national team was also inspired by an excellent individual display from Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar after contributing eight of the 10 goals with Huzaimi Mahari adding two goals.
Malaysia secured the gold medal after beating Thailand 9-8 in a tightly contested encounter 10 years after winning the title.
