HIS Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), yesterday presided over the opening of the UBD Convocation Festival 2017, with the theme of ‘Youths are the Catalyst of Transformation for a Successful Future’.
The ceremony commenced with a sabda from His Royal Highness, which was followed by the official launching and the signing of a commemorative plaque.
His Royal Highness was then conducted on a tour of the exhibition at the UBD Sports Complex, showcasing 13 innovative and creative projects by current and graduating students as well as UBD alumni, in conveying constructive ideas to shape the country’s future.
A handmade pesambah by a UBD alumni from the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the UBD Students’ Association was presented to His Royal Highness, who consented to a group photo session before departing from the ceremony.
The UBD Convocation Festival 2017 is organised by the Student Affairs Section and UBD Students Association, with assistance from the Office of Promotion and Events Management (OPEM), to celebrate the success of its current and graduating students, in the run-up to the Convocation Ceremony on September 7, at the Chancellor Hall.
The exhibition is open to the public until September 6, and among the main highlights are the UBD Flyer 1000 from the Centre for Advanced Materials and Energy Sciences (CAMES); the B Notepad from the UBD School of Business and Economics; the Audio Pendant from the Faculty of Integrated Technologies (FIT); and the Education Intervention Programme (PIP) from the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE).
There is even an exhibit on the evolution of UBD’s Shell Eco-Marathon cars, which have won a number of awards.
Among those present at yesterday’s opening ceremony were Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education; Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Bahrin bin Abdullah, the Minister of Development; Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism; Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, the Minister of Health; Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Education; and Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Vice-Chancellor of UBD.
