PROJEK Ikan Pusu (PIP) enhanced their reputation in Brunei football yesterday after PIP ‘A’ won an Under-12 tournament organised by the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) for the first time.
The 16-team tournament at NFABD House’s Artificial Field saw PIP ‘A’ win the overall champion award after scoring 12 goals in six games and letting in none.
Among the players who laced up during the half-day tournament were Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak ‘Abdul Haseeb bin Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim, who played for International School Brunei (ISB).
NFABD’s Centre of Excellence Brunei-Muara (COE BM) finished third behind ISB ‘A’, and Rimba Star ‘B’ was fourth.
PIP – winner of numerous compe-titions since its establishment in 2001 – also had three other sides in the tournament, the best represented team in the competition.
“PIP ‘A’s good passing game, first touch and control of the ball were why they won the tournament,” said PIP head coach Haji Omar bin Haji Jamil.
“They also followed my instructions well and I am very proud of them – and the fact they did not let in a single goal.
“I would like to congratulate NFABD and NFABD Technical Director Yvon Avry for organising this tournament for the children.
“PIP, our coaches, the kids, their parents and our fans and supporters are all very happy with the good organisation.
“We look forward to more one-day carnivals like these in the future, and will continue to support all of NFABD’s grassroots football plans,” he added.
Games were played over two seven-minute halves, and for the first round, the 16 teams were divided into four groups of four and each team played each other once.
For the second round, the four teams finishing first in their group played in one group, and likewise for the teams finishing second, third and fourth.
HS Family, PIP ‘A’, ISB ‘A’ and Rimba Star ‘B’ topped their respective groups in the first round – with PIP ‘A’ scoring six goals and letting in none against their Group 2 opponents.
PIP ‘A’ then won the tournament by winning all their games amongst the group winners – with the team once again scoring six goals and letting in none.
PIP ‘A’s Mohd Danish Ataullah bin Mohd Ridwan also won the Best Goalkeeper award while Dash Football Academy’s Awangku Mohd Syafiq Hilmi bin Pengiran Mohd Sharom won the Best Player award.
Dash Junior Football Team won the group made up of the runners-up, DMY Squad won the group made up of the third-placed teams and PIP ‘B’ won the group made up of the fourth-placed teams.
