44 to represent Brunei at 9th Asean Para Games

A TOTAL of 44 participants will be representing Brunei Darussalam at the 9th Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur from September 17-23.

The contingent comprise 29 athletes and 15 personnel.

A flag handing ceremony was held yesterday morning at the DiGadong Hall of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) main building in Berakas.

Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, handed over the national flag to Haji Rosmadee bin Haji Mohd Daud, the Chief de Mission of the contingent.

Also present were Haji Amer Hamzah bin Pehin Orang Kaya Amar Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Zakaria, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Datuk Ghulam Jelani bin Khanizaman, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Brunei Darussalam.

The Brunei Darussalam contingent will participate in three of the 16 sports competed – Athletics (Track & Field), Ten-Pin Bowling and Cycling.

Athletics will see 11 males and three females competing, Ten-Pin Bowling will see nine males and one female participating, while five males will take part in the Cycling event.

Brunei’s previous achievements were three gold, three silver and six bronze medals at the 8th Asean Para Games, Singapore in 2015.

The contingent will depart next Thursday (September 14).

Saidin bin Haji Damit said he hopes that the team’s efforts will be worthwhile.

“We’ll try to focus on the matches and will try our best to obtain better results in Ten-Pin Bowling.”

Alihan bin Muda said he wanted more Gold medals for Brunei and will try their very best to obtain the very best results.

“I hope our athletes will do their best and improve better results this year,” Haji Rosmadee said.
