HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Deputy Sultan as the personal representative of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, arrived safely in the State of Kedah Darul Aman, Malaysia yesterday morning to attend the Royal Ceremonial Funeral of Al-Marhum His Majesty Sultan Al-Mu’tassimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah, Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman at Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar, the State of Kedah Darul Aman.
Greeting His Royal Highness at the Pulau Pinang International Airport in Bayan Lepas were Abdul Bari bin Abdullah, Mayor of the Langkawi Municipality; Dato Paduka Haji Alaihuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Haji Awang Mohd Taha, the High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia; senior officers from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the High Commission of Brunei Darussalam in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
His Royal Highness then consented to board a motorcade towards Tabung Haji Hotel and Convention Centre at which His Royal Highness resided, in Alor Setar.
His Royal Highness later consented to attend the Royal Ceremonial Funeral of Al-Marhum His Majesty Sultan Al-Mu’tassimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj at Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar.
The arrival of His Royal Highness was welcomed by Dato Lela Putra Dato’ Tunku Jaafar Laksamana bin Tunku Nong Jiwa, a member of Kedah Darul Aman’s royal family. His Royal Highness then consented to proceed to pay the final respect to Al-Marhum His Majesty Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj, the late Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman.
Al-Marhum His Majesty Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj passed away at 2.30pm on Monday, at the Istana Anak Bukit. His Majesty, who reigned the State of Kedah Darul Aman for 59 years, was 89 years old.
Al-Marhum His Majesty Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Al-Haj also made a Malaysian history by being elected twice as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, the first time from September 21, 1970, until September 12, 1975; and the second time from December 13, 2011 until December 12, 2016.
The late Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman was born on November 28, 1927. On July 14, 1958, he ascended the throne of the State of Kedah Darul Aman after the demise of his father, Sultan Badlishah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. He was installed as the Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman on February 20, 1959.
He received his early education at Sekolah Melayu Titi Gajah, and then went to Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Setar.
In 1952, as the Raja Muda of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim attended Wadham College, Oxford, in London, graduating in social science and public administration.
The late Sultan Abdul Halim is survived by Her Majesty Sultanah Hajah Haminah Hamidun and two princesses, Her Royal Highness Dato’ Seri Diraja Tunku Soraya and Her Royal Highness Tunku Temenggong Kedah, Brigadier General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Diraja Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz.
Accompanying His Royal Highness to the Royal Ceremonial Funeral was Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs.
From Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar, Kedah Darul Aman, His Royal Highness proceeded with a delegation to Pulau Pinang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.
Present to bid farewell at the airport were the Mayor of the Langkawi Municipality, the High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia, senior officers from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and officers from the High Commission of Brunei Darussalam.
A Doa Selamat was recited by Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.
