Brunei a preferred destination for religious studies, says Singapore minister

SINGAPOREAN students taking up religious studies prefer to study in Brunei Darussalam.

This was stated by Singapore’s Environment and Water Resources Minister Masagos Zulkifli bin Masagos Mohamad, during his visit to Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) yesterday.

He added that there are 19 Singaporean students enrolled at UNISSA.

Masagos Zulkifli and members of the Singapore delegation were welcomed upon arrival by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education and Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector of UNISSA.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar; High Commissioner of Singapore to Brunei, Lim Hong Huai; and officers of the Singapore Islamic Religious Council and UNISSA were also present.

The Rector of UNISSA briefed the Singaporean minister and delegation on the university’s background and development.

The delegation was also briefed on the background of the Mazhab Shafi’e Research Centre by Dr Azme bin Haji Matali, Director of Mazhab Shafi’e Research Centre, UNISSA.
The visit was aimed at learning about the programmes at UNISSA.

Earlier, the Singapore minister said that students from Singapore are comfortable in studying religious courses in Brunei.

Masagos Zulkifli added that the Singapore Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) planned a number of programmes to set up a university to produce scholars and religious guides.
