THE US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam yesterday hosted a speaker programme and workshop for local media professionals and media students titled ‘Responsible Journalism.’
Delivered by Dr Deni Elliot, a speaker from the United States, the two-day workshop was held at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Radisson Hotel, and touched on a number of subjects such as professional ethics in journalism, journalism standards, as well as the paradigm shift from analogue to digital media.
In welcoming Dr Elliot to Brunei, US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Craig B Allen said, “On behalf of the US Embassy here in Brunei Darussalam, we are honoured to have Dr Deni Elliott to share her expert opinions on media trends and standards, and to have her experiencing the media culture in Brunei. We look forward to further engaging with the growing local media industry through this professional workshop.”
Dr Elliot, who is from the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of South Florida, St Petersburg, discussed journalism standards with Professional Communication and Media students in a talk titled ‘Journalism Standards and Practices’ during a media workshop.
She also moderated a panel session, discussing media ethics with a UBD faculty.
In her ‘Journalism Standards and Practices’ talk, Dr Elliot walked through the definition of journalism and journalism restraint and practices, as well as segment titled ‘Paradigm Shift of Analog to Digital,’ where she discussed the transition of traditional media to digital mode as well as the usage of technologies and social media when creating news with an audience of reporters and editors from various local media publications, local bloggers and freelance writers, using real-world case studies and group discussions.
Dr Elliot also moderated a panel session with US Media Programme alumnus titled ‘Tips from Abroad: Making Others’ Media Practices Your Own,’ which saw participants sharing their experiences while undergoing the US Media Programme.
One of the panellists, Siti Hajar binti Mohd Mahathir, shared her experiences during her time in the ‘Reporting Tour on Maritime Security and Territorial Disputes in Southeast Asia FPC’ media programme in 2015, while Media Permata reporter Yu Hock Sim shared experience from his recent participation in the ‘Reporting Tour on Media Literacy and Press Freedom in the 21st Century’ media programme.
