THE Brunei Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) – the National Sports Association governing aquatic sports in Brunei – is currently holding the 6th Brunei Open & Masters Long Course Swimming Championships which ends today (September 17) at the Aquatic Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium Sports Complex in Berakas.
There are 39 individual events where 97 swimmers are competing in the Open and Masters categories.
The championship saw a total of 493 registered entries.
Seven teams are competing in the meet with six local teams comprising Brunei Speed Swimming Club, Dolphin Swimming Team, International School Brunei (ISB) Swimming Club, Jerudong Swimming Club, Panaga Stingrays, Royal Brunei Recreational Club and Victoria Swimming Club from Labuan.
Harjimmey Zainal, Team Meet Manager for the event, said, “This meet is a good platform for us to select swimmers for the upcoming 41st Southeast Asia Age Group (SEAAG) Championships which will be hosted in Brunei Darussalam from November 10-12. On top of that, Brunei is commended to be the qualifying platform for the Youth Olympic Games’ (YOG) during the upcoming SEAAG Championship itself.”
“We expect to see new national records to be set these three days. It is great to see the seniors and young swimmers compete together in one event. We expect to see more master swimmers in our future meets to help encourage our young swimmers, and help foster healthy competition and lifestyle in Brunei Darussalam. We are thankful for everyone’s support.”
ISB Hammerheads led the medal tally yesterday with 28 medals – 14 gold, nine silver and five bronze.
Brunei Speed Swimming Club trails in 2nd with 10 medals – seven gold, two silver and one bronze.
Jerudong Swimming Club is close behind in 3rd place with nine medals – seven gold, one silver and one bronze.
Meanwhile, Victoria Swimming Club is in 4th with 16 medals – four gold, eight silver and four bronze.
Dolphin Swimming Club was in 5th place with 11 medals – three gold, three silver and five bronze.
Panaga Stingrays (three gold and one silver) and Royal Brunei Recreation Club (one silver and three bronze) both claimed four medals each.
