PEHIN Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports attended the opening ceremony of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Asean Para Games at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium.
Also present were Dato Paduka Haji Alaihuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Haji Awang Mohd Taha, the Brunei High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur; and Haji Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abdul Samad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said because of the powerful impact among the para athletes he hoped that the Para Games would be another glorious chapter in celebrating the human spirit across Southeast Asia.
Khairy said the athletes who were being honoured and celebrated yesterday night were extraordinary with stories of unimaginable challenges and sacrifices.

“They show us nothing is impossible. They do not just inspire others who are disabled but all of us. They remind us that even if we had no control of past circumstances, we can chart our own future,” he said in his speech at the opening ceremony held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
The ninth edition of the Games which will close on September 23 brings together some 1,421 athletes from 11 countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Timor Leste and host Malaysia.
At stake are 368 gold medals in 16 sports, which is the highest number of sports for competition at the Games.
