A RELIGIOUS ceremony was held at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the capital to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the renaming of Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan and to mark the new Hijrah year for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA).
The guest of honour at the ceremony was the Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong.
The event, organised by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department, commenced with the recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil and thanksgiving prayer to commemorate the anniversary of the capital’s renaming led by Mudim Haji Matassim bin Haji Metussin.
The prayer was read by Ustaz Zulkifli bin Haji Murat, a Mosque Officer at the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
Meanwhile, the new Hijrah year celebration for MoHA and its departments saw a special religious lecture delivered by Ustaz Dr Haji Ismuhadi bin Haji Abdullah from the Islamic Da’wah Centre.
The change of the capital’s name from Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan is commemorated every October 4.
During the historic occasion in 1970, the capital was renamed Bandar Seri Begawan in remembrance of the important contributions of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam in the development and modernisation of Brunei Darussalam.
Also present at the event yesterday were members of the Legislative Council, senior officials from MoHA and its departments, as well as mukim penghulus and village heads from the surrounding areas of the capital.
