THE opening night of the Sungai Kebun Bridge will be a historic and grand spectacle that will bring the Brunei River in the Capital to life, just as the whole country celebrates the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.
During a rehearsal last evening for the much anticipated opening ceremony that will also see the Brunei River transformed into a sea of colours with a river float procession and a fireworks display, preparations are in full swing for the grand opening of the 750-metre bridge, the Sultanate’s first cable stayed bridge that will connect Bandar Seri Begawan to Sungai Kebun.
Members of the public are all welcome to witness the historic occasion on the evening of October 14 and come out in droves to express their appreciation and joy to His Majesty on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration.
The river float procession will see the creative and colourful float designs put up by various government and private sector agencies while the fireworks display, sponsored by the Tiong Hwa Community in Brunei Darussalam will be a first of its kind in the Sultanate.
The rehearsal last evening saw members of the Jawatankuasa Tertinggi Jubli Emas Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam Menaiki Takhta, especially from the Sectoral Committee overseeing final preparations to ensure a smooth running of the event that is scheduled to be graced by His Majesty and Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam.
Among those present from the Jawatankuasa Sektoral Perarakan Jubli Emas Sambutan Jubli Emas Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam Menaiki Takhta during the rehearsal last evening include Joint Chairpersons Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, the Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara; Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs; Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti; and Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Mohd Nawawi bin Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Haji Awang Mohd Taha, the Private and Confidential Secretary to His Majesty.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a statement said members of the public are advised to obey traffic rules and regulations on that day to avoid congestion.
Once in operation, the B$139 million bridge that spans the iconic Kampong Ayer to connect Jalan Residency in the capital to Kampong Sungai Kebun in Lumapas is expected to reduce congestion of traffic especially in the Jalan Bengkurong Masin/Jalan Tutong. Built under the 10th National Development Plan (RKN), the bridge is adorned with a 157-metre tower in the centre that is topped with a 8.7-metre in diametre dome that anchors the bridge to the Brunei River. It is set to be another iconic site in the capital once it is fully operational.
