Borneo’s best of the best at basketball invitational

LOCAL basketball team Beruang Blazers will be competing against teams from Borneo in the upcoming Grand Borneo Invitational Challenge Basketball Championship, held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

The invitational, from October 9 to 14, is organised by Soon Lee Group of Companies and supported by the Brunei Basketball Association.

The competition will be held at the Indoor Stadium. Entrance is free.

Team Beruang Blazers, which competed in the 2nd Yuwang EBL Basketball League last year, is looking at acquiring the services of import players from the Philippines.

The team comprises head coach Rabboni Rosito from the Philippines, and local players Ben Sim (captain), Zainul Hussin, Choo Yung Jian, Yap Chun Ping, Jamri Ramlee, Soon Kian Leong, Lim Liang Wei, Darren Yap Jenn Chyuan, Han Ming Kwong and Jake Chong Kah Hou.

The competition will see the participation of Kuching Lord Tiger, the champions of the 2nd Yuwang EBL Basketball League, boosted by the inclusion of Leong Kar Fatt, a Sabah state player and Imports Jay Collado and Bobby Balucanag.

Other teams include Vois Basketball team from Pontianak, Indonesia, and Miri King Kong Basketball team of Sarawak comprising Ma Chee Keun, point guard of Malaysia national team and Yiek Chai Teck player of Sarawak state as well as John Foronda and Pari Llagas as their imports.
