HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, as Patron of the Advisory Committee for the Golden Jubilee Celebration and Chairman of the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) Board of Directors, has consented to officiate the Launching Ceremony of the BND50 Commemorative Polymer Notes, Commemorative Coins and the 5th Series of Coins in Circulation, in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Following the event, a press conference led by AMBD’s Acting Executive Director Pengiran Maslina binti Pengiran Haji Mahmud of the Currency Management Unit was held to share details on the BND50 Commemorative Polymer Notes, Commemorative Coins and the 5th Series of Coins in Circulation.

Other senior AMBD staff present were Head of Corporate Communications Hajah Nurhuaida binti Haji Damit, and the Currency Management Unit’s Senior Manager Juffry bin Emran and Manager Noor Izzah binti Haji Abu Bakar.

During the conference, Pengiran Maslina explained the design of the new BND50 Commemorative Polymer Notes.

“The new note is yellow in colour, signifying the royal colour. The obverse side of the note features a new portrait of His Majesty in Royal Brunei Armed Forces ceremonial uniform,” she said. “The note also shows an image of His Majesty being crowned by His Majesty’s late father, Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam, with the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in the background.

“The reverse side of the note features an image of His Majesty interacting with members of the public accompanied by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince; reflecting their concern and care towards the subjects.”

Pengiran Maslina added, “The main security feature is the face value BND50, located at the top right corner of the note, which is a newly introduced security feature for a Brunei Darussalam polymer note called SPARK Live. SPARK Live is a silkscreen printed optical variable feature with a rolling bar effect – when viewed from different angles, the feature changes from green to gold colour.”

The designer of the note is Pengiran Khamarol Zaman bin Pengiran Haji Tajudin.

Besides the commemorative notes, AMBD is also issuing limited edition commemorative coins in gold and silver which feature a portrait of His Majesty surrounded by 50 Payung Diraja, symbolising the concept of ‘Raja Payung Negara’, reflecting His Majesty’s personality as a compassionate leader focussed on protecting and safeguarding the country, and ensuring the welfare of his subjects are taken care of. The reverse side features an image of the Mahkota used during His Majesty’s Coronation Ceremony on August 1, 1968.

Accompanying the release of the Golden Jubilee commemorative notes is the introduction of a new series of circulation coins to commemorate the event.

The obverse side of the new 5th coin series – designed by Pengiran Amir bin Pengiran Haji Sablon – features a new portrait of His Majesty. The reverse side shows the depiction of significant royal regalia used during the Coronation Ceremony.

AMBD will also be circulating 50-cent coins with special jawi inscriptions in limited quantity of 500,000 pieces. It will also allocate the coins in special packaging, to be distributed to students in pre-schools, primary and secondary schools, and sixth form centres throughout all four districts later in the year.

In conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration, the following limited edition commemorative products will also be available for sale at AMBD’s offices: a single numismatic note with special ‘HB50’ prefix in acrylic box (priced at BND200); a commemorative set of BND25 and BND50 notes in a folder (priced at BND160); and a BND50 commemorative polymer sheet in a folder (priced at BND55).
