HIS Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, accompanied by British High Commissioner Richard Lindsay, recently visited the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah – one of the most impressive and beautiful examples of modern Islamic architecture in Southeast Asia.
The Earl of Wessex was received by Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman and Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud.
According to a press release from the British High Commission in Brunei Darussalam, His Royal Highness was taken on a tour of the main prayer hall where His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and other members of the Brunei royal family performed their Kesyukuran Ceremony at the start of the Golden Jubilee Celebration.
His Royal Highness, who commented on the impressive size of the hall and the wonderful acoustics underneath the central dome, then visited a group of women attending a religious studies class and a separate group of men undergoing Al-Quran reading classes.
His Royal Highness also visited the Ismail Omar Haji Abdul Aziz Library and viewed some of His Majesty’s personal collections of Al-Quran manuscripts and scriptures.
His Royal Highness was in Brunei representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Golden Jubilee Celebration.
