UNIVERSITI Teknologi Brunei (UTB) yesterday feted 34 of its best students in an award ceremony held in conjunction with the UTB Convocation Ceremony 2017.
Awards were presented to students under the Dean’s List and for demonstrating excellence in co-curricular activities.
Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Education was the guest of honour.
Also present were Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman; Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education (MoE), Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad; and senior officials from MoE and UTB.
The event began with Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat recitation, followed by a welcoming speech by the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.
In her speech, Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah said the awards ceremony is a gesture of recognition and appreciation from the university towards the students for achieving excellence in their fields.
“I hope that the awards will further encourage and motivate the recipients to continue to excel in their fields of study,” said the vice-chancellor. “Certainly this success will bring joy and feelings of gratitude to the parents and guardians. The support and encouragement given to their children to help achieve success are very much appreciated.”
Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah congratulated the university’s academic staff who contributed to the students’ achievements.
The ceremony continued with the presenting of awards to the students by the Deputy Minister of Education.
The Dean’s List – first introduced by UTB in 2015 – gives recognition to first-, second- and third-year students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. These students represent the top five per cent of students in their respective fields.
This year, 29 students received the Dean’s List award. The awards are presented to students who underwent programmes from the UTB School of Business, School of Computing and Informatics, and the Faculty of Engineering.
Meanwhile, five students who excelled in their co-curricular activities also received awards.
The awards, sponsored by the Student Representative Council, were presented according to the following categories: ‘Religious Activities’, ‘Outstanding Life Skill Achiever’, ‘Outstanding Community Service Achiever’, and ‘Sportsman of the Year 2017’.
