MORE than 180 people recently participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Forum 2017 at the Lecture Theatre at Block R of the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.
The forum, organised by the Health Promotion Centre (HPC) of the Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with the Panaga Health Centre and Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, aimed to raise awareness of breast cancer and its various prevention methods among the community – in particular, working women living in the Belait District, and to emphasise the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and highlight the significance of early detection of the disease.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Forum 2017, themed ‘You Care, We Care’, was also held to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an international event observed annually during October which aims to highlight various issues relating to breast cancer, such as the dangers and prevention of the disease.
Various breast cancer-related topics were covered in the forum. These included the various breast cancer prevention methods for the general population, in particular, breast self-examination (BSE); early detection and treatment through care of breast cancer, regular checkups and BSE; and supporting those with breast cancer, which includes palliative care of the disease.
The forum started with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by welcoming remarks from the forum’s co-chairperson, Dr Hajah Norol-Ehsan binti Haji Abdul Hamid, a Medical Officer at the MoH.
Dr Hajah Norol-Ehsan expressed her gratitude to attendees at the forum, commenting that their presence demonstrated their support for raising awareness on breast cancer.
She hoped the forum will help raise awareness on breast cancer as well as the various preventive methods that can be taken against the disease.
Three speakers presented topics on the disease at the forum: Dr Haji Mohammad Ady bin Haji Ahmad, a Senior Medical Officer; Dr Amalinda binti Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Suyoi, another Senior Medical Officer, who touched upon various breast cancer issues and topics; and Hajah Aminah binti Haji Momin, a breast cancer survivor who gave a talk on battling and overcoming the disease.
Other activities conducted at the forum included a BSE demonstration and an exhibition on breast cancer. Many attendees were young professionals working in various government and private sector organisations, including various institutions in the Belait district.
