Over 2,000 join cycling, run in celebration of teachers

MORE than 2,000 people gathered at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital yesterday morning to participate in the ‘Thank You Teacher’ cycling and run event as a tribute to the nation’s teachers.

The event, held in conjunction with the 27th Teacher’s Day celebrations, was organised by the Co-Curriculum Education Department of the Ministry of Education.

On hand to officiate the cycling portion of the event was Acting Minister of Education Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the guest of honour, while the run segment was officiated by Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs.

Also present was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Education.

The cycle event covered a route totalling 12km through the capital, while participants for the run only needed to complete a distance of 4km.

Besides enlivening the 27th Teacher’s Day celebrations, yesterday’s ‘Thank You Teacher’ event was also held to support Bandarku Ceria and ‘Car-free Sunday’, as well as the latest step to encourage the people of Brunei Darussalam to live a healthy lifestyle through exercise and for them to foster closer ties with senior officials and staff of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs.

A total of B$9,292.40 was raised from the event, which was later handed over to the Down Syndrome Association (ABLE).
