His Majesty holds bilateral meeting with Russian President

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday held a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, at the Radisson Blu Resort and Congress Centre in Sochi.

During the meeting, His Majesty and Vladimir Putin discussed bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Federation, and exchanged views on regional and international matters of mutual concern.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of bilateral relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Russian Federation since the establishment of their diplomatic ties on October 1, 1991.

Both sides are also committed to enhancing joint efforts in elevating trade and economic cooperation in many fields including defence, energy, transport, culture, health, education and tourism.

Meanwhile, His Majesty on May 18 arrived safely in Sochi, Russia, to attend the two-day 20th Asean-Rusia Commemorative Summit which will end today.

Present to greet His Majesty at Sochi International Airport were Yuri Filatov, Director of the Department of State Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Sergey Altukhov, Deputy Head of Administration (Governor) of the Krasnodar region.

Also present to greet His Majesty were Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II; and Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office; and Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim, Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to the Russian Federation.

His Majesty was then presented with the traditional ‘bread and salt’ dish which is one of the oldest tradition in the Russian Federation.

His Majesty then boarded a motorcade to a renowned hotel in Sochi where His Majesty will reside throughout the 20th Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit.

This year, the Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit will mark the 20th anniversary of Asean-Russia relations since the Russian Federation was elevated to a full Dialogue Partner of Asean at the 29th AMM in July 1996 in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia.

Asean and the Russian Federation have now established an Asean-Russia Eminent Persons Group (AREPG) to review Asean-Russia relations over the past years, explore ways to widen and deepen the existing cooperation between Asean and the Russian Federation as well as to make recommendations on the future direction for both sides.

Apart from that, Asean and the Russian Federation are also exploring cooperation in other areas including political and security, economic, socio-cultural, pandemic diseases, sustaining natural resources, environmental conservation, food security, agriculture, education, transport, and Initiative for Asean Integration.
