Over 8,000 take part in Golden Jubilee Run

MORE than 8,000 people in all four districts yesterday participated in the Golden Jubilee Run jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Health in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

In the Brunei-Muara District, 6,202 participants registered for the run while in Belait District, there were 569. In Tutong District, there were 941 and in Temburong District, there were 369.

The Golden Jubilee Run for the Brunei Muara-District held at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien in the capital was attended by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, as the guest of honour.

Also present was Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs, together with other senior officials.

Both ministers joined the early morning warm-up session with the other participants, before sounding off the run.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports first flagged off the 10km women run, followed by Minister of Home Affairs, who flagged off the 10km men run.

Both ministers then flagged off the 4km Fun Run, before joining in with the participants.

All of the first, second and third-place winners for the Men’s Open and Women’s Open categories received cash prizes of $1,000, $800 and $600 respectively, along with medals, while the fourth to eighth-place finishers received $500, $450, $400, $350 and $300, respectively.

Apart from celebrating the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne, the main aim of hosting the run was to motivate members of the local community to practise a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and recreational activities.
