SACOFA Sdn Bhd (Sacofa), the ICT infrastructure company tasked with delivering on Sarawak’s ambitious telecommunications and broadband coverage targets, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Datastream Technology Sdn Bhd (DST) – the premier telecommunications provider in Brunei Darussalam, through DST’s wholly-owned subsidiary DST International (B) Sdn Bhd.

The MoU, signed last Thursday, is to form a strategic collaboration to bring international broadband quality to Sarawak.

This new partnership will further boost the implementation of high-quality broadband services in the state, in line with Sacofa’s vision of ‘connecting Sarawak to the future’, which is consistent with the state government’s vision for Sarawak to ensure the benefits of connectivity to all sections of society – no matter how remote they are, through wired or wireless means.

Mohamed Zaid bin Mohamed Zaini, Managing Director of Sacofa, said, “I am delighted to announce that this partnership will be highly beneficial to broadband consumers in Sarawak as the synergy of activities will leverage on DST’s great partnership with MyRepublic, a highly reputable industry player in the broadband services arena.

“DST, the largest telecom firm in Brunei Darussalam, has a strong track record of providing consistent and reliable services in broadband and mobile services. I am especially pleased that DST’s stakeholding in MyRepublic will add significant value to this partnership as MyRepublic is a well-known market disruptor that has transformed the landscape of the industry by providing high-speed broadband at amazingly low rates. Consumers in Singapore, for instance, enjoy speeds of 1Gbps for around S$50.00. This is the sort of value-for-money benchmark we too would like to replicate in Sarawak.

“Sacofa has always been focussed on delivering on the state government’s agenda. We are more dedicated than ever in improving Sarawak’s telecommunications infrastructure to ensure we meet the requirements to deliver on the backbone of the digital economy as envisioned by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“With this partnership, we look forward to unlocking value in bringing world-class broadband at affordable rates to Sarawak,” he highlighted at the signing of the MoU, which took place at the 13th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Hussain, Chief Executive Officer of DST, said, “We are excited to build on our existing strong relationship with Sacofa to catalyse further the connectivity potential in Sarawak to support the state’s digital economy initiatives.

“DST’s in-depth telecommunications experience together with our association with MyRepublic and Sacofa’s experience in providing ICT infrastructure is a good alliance in realising high-quality and affordable broadband services in Sarawak.

“We look forward to working together in developing the next stage of this exciting prospect, which is in line with DST’s expansion plan,” he said.
