THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) of Brunei Darussalam and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) of the People’s Republic of China look set to further enhance legal cooperation following a fruitful exchange between Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh and Prosecutor General Professor Cao Jianming of SPP yesterday during a courtesy call at the Law Building.
In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both sides reiterated the importance of strengthening legal cooperation, particularly in the fields of prosecution, enhancing exchange of visits, providing assistance in matters of mutual interest and sharing of legal materials, prosecutorial work information and legal publications.
The statement also underlined the commitment in strengthening exchange and training of prosecutors of both countries.
During the courtesy call, the Attorney General of Brunei Darussalam and SPP Prosecutor General acknowledged the long-standing relationship and close cooperation between both sides, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation especially under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Legal Cooperation signed in 2002 between AGC of Brunei Darussalam and SPP of the People’s Republic of China.
Both sides also discussed the China-Asean Prosecutors-General Conference which serves as a forum for high-level dialogue to discuss and formulate policies to combat transnational crimes and explore opportunities for further cooperation between the two.
The next China-Asean Prosecutors-General Conference will be hosted by Brunei Darussalam in August next year.
This is the first time the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate of the People’s Republic of China and his team are visiting Brunei Darussalam.
Lauding the visit of Cao Jianming, the Attorney General said it will not only strengthen the friendly ties between the two countries but also open new avenues to enhance cooperation.
In his remarks, the Chinese Prosecutor General expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by the Attorney General of Brunei Darussalam and officials from AGC.
“It is an honour to visit Brunei Darussalam as this year marks the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne. We are quite impressed by the peace, stability as well as the high standard of living the people of Brunei currently enjoy.
“This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the MoU on Legal Cooperation between the AGC and SPP. Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati has been working hard to push forward the bilateral relationship between our two offices since she took the role of the Attorney General of Brunei Darussalam,” he said.
The Prosecutor General is looking forward to work together with the AGC to further enrich the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Also in attendance during the courtesy call was Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Yang Jian and senior officials from both sides.
In the evening, a dinner reception was hosted by the Attorney General for Prosecutor General Cao Jianming at The Rizqun International Hotel. Also present at the dinner were Permanent Secretary (Law and Welfare) at the Prime Minister’s Office Datin Elinda binti Haji CA Mohamed, Yang Jian as well as senior officials from both countries.
