THE recently established Brunei Young Global Thinkers Network, or otherwise simply known as BYG Thinkers, hosted its first get-together event last Sunday morning in Beribi.
The event was attended by a group of young Bruneians from a diverse range of educational and professional backgrounds; including a secondary teacher, a certified diver, a creative marketer, a business operator, an archaeology intern, a communication and media undergraduate, jobseekers, and others. The event was aimed at ‘breaking the ice’ among the attendees who were mostly strangers to one another, and increasing their awareness and understanding on the Network, as well as on the global issues that it aims to address.
The event continued with a ‘roundtable discussion’ on a range of global issues pertinent to the nation, including basic education, creative arts, mental health, business and economic growth, tourism, foreign investments, and others, while exchanging ideas on how to make a difference in these areas. BYG Thinkers is a start-up network that seeks to lead global conversations among local youths with the hopes of expanding their global outlook and inspiring to become globally competitive while staying true to Brunei’s 2035 Vision.
The Network is founded by Awangku Syafi Bakar and is managed by him and his team of project officers including Fifi Hasman, Halimah Basiuni and Samuel Shie. Supporting this start-up project is the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam and the Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative (YSEALI).
The Network will soon hold a much bigger conversation in its inaugural dialogue on Youth and Global Engagement, which will feature a panel of distinguished youths. This event will be part of the 10-day community service effort known as YOUnified hosted by the YSEALI, taking place in each Asean country next month.
