THE Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday announced that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in November 2017 decreased by 0.3 per cent year-on-year compared to November 2016.
The Non-Food Index decreased by 0.7 per cent, while the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 1.6 per cent year-on-year.
The CPI decrease in November 2017 was mainly due to decrease in the indices of Clothing and Footwear (5.3 per cent); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (3.2 per cent); and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (1.7 per cent).
The Clothing and Footwear Index decrease was mainly due to lower prices of clothing materials, garments as well as shoes and footwear.
Meanwhile, lower Furnishing, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance Index was due to decrease in prices of furniture, household textiles as well as household appliances.
Lower Miscellaneous Goods and Services Index was due to decrease in prices of hairdressing, other articles for personal care and travel goods and bags.
On a period-on-period basis, CPI in January-November 2017 decreased by 0.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.
The Non-Food Index decreased by 0.2 per cent, while the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Index increased by 0.1 per cent.
CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period and compiled on a monthly basis.
The list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household from the Household Expenditure Survey.
