HAJAH Anis Sabrina bin Haji Yahya emerged winner of the Women’s Sabre Individual event in the Brunei Open Fencing Championship 2018 after overcoming a highly-spirited display by Dayangku Siti Syahirah Pengiran Idris in an enthralling 15-10 win in the final at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex yesterday.
The all-Brunei Muara affair saw Dayangku Siti Syahirah take a slender 1-0 lead before Hajah Anis, a national female fencer, seized control with an 8-2 lead.
However, Dayangku Siti Syahirah threatened to stage a comeback after trailing 10-12 but Hajah Anis Sabrina ensured victory without slipping further points.
“I wish I could have done better but I’m happy with my result,” Hajah Anis told the Weekend Bulletin.
“We actually can do well and maybe the experience helps us to gain success. We just need support from the public and the government.”
“Bruneians have the potential to succeed but we need support. We really hope that this Brunei Open will bring that support,” she further continued.
With Dayangku Siti Syahirah providing her a minor scare after narrowing the gap, she agreed that it was a really competitive match.
Hajah Anis Sabrina’s main sport is Women’s Foil, in which she won gold, and she admitted that sabre is new to her.
“My coach is preparing my footwork with sabre,” she further added.
Ken Soraya Ananta Tantri Budi and Azzeldine Aliya Zahira Hisnindarsyah of Ikasi Surabaya from Indonesia shared a joint third-place finish.
Meanwhile, Anggi Williansyah of Kota Bogor from Indonesia grabbed gold in the Men’s Epee Individual after beating team-mate Muhammad Dwi Wahyu 15-10 in the final.
The Brunei-Muara pair of Mohd Hafizzi Ilah and Awangku Ahmad Zaim Pengiran Idris settled for joint bronze.
