COMPETITION law is gaining attention and widely recognised as the cornerstone to build on economic growth, productivity, stimulate innovation and bring consumer benefits with better choice, price and quality goods, according to Dato Paduka Eddie bin Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, Chairman of Competition Commission of Brunei Darussalam.
“Competitive markets also provide opportunities for existing and new businesses to expand and enter into the market. Therefore, there should be an effective competition regime in place for our country to stay relevant in the competitive world marketplace and align with the economic pillar of our national Vision 2035,” he said yesterday, as the guest of honour at the Japan-Asean Integrated Fund (JAIF)’s sub-regional workshop on the selection and prioritisation of sectors or industries for market studies.
The event, organised by the Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs, Department of Economic Planning and Development at the Prime Minister’s Office, is being held at the Badi’ah Hotel.
The workshop is also supported by the Japan Fair Trade Commission, the Commission for the Supervision of Business (KPPU), Indonesia and the Asean Secretariat.
Dato Paduka Eddie explained that since the appointment of the Competition Commission of Brunei Darussalam and the establishment of the Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs back in August 2017, preparatory work is ongoing in laying the groundwork for the law to be implemented in phases.
The two-day workshop is attended by 37 representatives from Asean competition authorities and government agencies.
