Minister of Education receives UNESCO official

MINISTER of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman received a courtesy call from Professor Shahbaz Khan, Director of UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific based in Jakarta. He is also the UNESCO representative for Brunei Darussalam.

Professor Shahbaz Khan is on a mission to Brunei from January 16-19 as part of a series of visits to a number of UNESCO member countries.

Through this visit, he aims to strengthen the existing future partnership between the UNESCO Office in Jakarta and Government of Brunei.

Also present were Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education and officials from the ministry.

Matters discussed during the courtesy call were possible areas of collaboration on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the effort to promote Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) – Quality Education.

During the meeting, Professor Khan emphasised on the promotion of culture and heritage, especially Brunei’s tangible and intangible heritage such as foods, textiles, and historical sites.

The UNESCO official also wished to explore cooperation in other areas such as research in science and technology, agriculture and early childhood.

After the courtesy call, Professor Khan delivered a lecture titled ‘UNESCO Initiatives to Promote Sustainable Tourism and World Heritage’ at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

In his talk, he shared UNESCO’s plan for tourism and heritage management where cultural assets are valued and protected.

He also mentioned that UNESCO Office Jakarta has embarked on a project on sustainable tourism management in its effort to protect and conserve unique and authentic heritage values in Southeast Asia.

A meeting between Professor Khan and the Secretariat of the Brunei Darussalam National Commission to UNESCO was also held which involved relevant stakeholders from various ministries.

Professor Khan will visit the Sungai Liang Recreational Park, the Brunei Forestry, Herbarium Museum and Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park.
