Sultan arrives in India for Asean special meet

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday evening arrived in India’s capital New Delhi to attend the Asean-India Commemorative Summit and the nation’s 69th Republic Day celebration, which will be held today and tomorrow, respectively.

His Majesty will be joining leaders from nine other Asean member countries to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the special summit commemorating 25 years of Asean-India dialogue partnership and attend the Republic Day celebration as one of the guests of honour.

Present at the Air Force Station, Palam to greet His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on arrival were Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Minister for Minority Affairs of the Republic of India and Nagma Mohamed Mallick, High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Brunei Darussalam.

Also present to greet His Majesty were Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II and Dato Paduka Haji Sidek bin Ali, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the Republic of India.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was presented with a bouquet of flowers. This was followed by a cultural performance.

His Majesty then boarded a motorcade towards a renowned hotel in New Delhi where the monarch would be residing throughout the duration of the Asean-India Commemorative Summit.

The commemorative summit, which carries the theme, ‘Shared Values, Common Destiny’ is set to mark the 25th anniversary of dialogue partnership, the 15th anniversary of summit-level partnership and five years of strategic relations between Asean and India.

Earlier in the day, prior to His Majesty’s departure from Istana Nurul Iman, Doa Selamat was recited by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti.

Present at His Majesty the Sultan’s Flight Hangar in Rimba to bid farewell to the monarch were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik; His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel; and Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah.

Also present were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran-Pengiran Cheteria; the Speaker of the Legislative Council; Cabinet Ministers; Members of the Privy Council; Deputy Ministers; the Commissioner of Police; the Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces; and a representative of the High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Brunei Darussalam.
