FIVE students from the Russian Federation are currently studying at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), under an educational cooperation agreement between UBD and St Petersburg State University.

The students will undergo various courses at UBD’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for one semester, from January to May.

The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam, Vladlen Semivolos, said the educational programme is an important part of Brunei-Russia relations, and a major step towards enhancing educational ties between the two countries.

“This is the first batch of students from Russia to study in this country, which is a result of the signing of a cooperation agreement last year, on the exchange of students between UBD and St Petersburg State University,” he said.

The development of relations in the field of education was one of the major objectives accomplished during His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 2005 State Visit to the Russian Federation.

Semivolos said the present educational exchange programme is a realisation of the agreement between His Majesty and Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, when the two leaders met at the Asean-Russian Federation Commemorative Summit in Sochi, on May 19-20, 2016.

The five Russians in the exchange programme – Uliana Shvets-Teneta-Gurii, Daria Zabelina, Pavel Travkin, Arsenii Grekhov and Valeriia Savvina – are all second- or third-year bachelor degree students at St Petersburg State University.
