MPRT holds ‘Contract Farming’ programme

THE Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), through the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, is holding its ‘Contract Farming’ programme for the second time at the Pusat Urusniaga Hortikultur Rimba Horticulture Business Centre, Gadong.

The first session was held from January 15 – 18. A total of 14 participants attended the first programme. A total of 17 participants enrolled in the second session which concludes on February 1. The programme includes briefings from selected entrepreneurs and the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood, Hajah Aidah binti Haji Mohd Hanifah as well as officials from the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood.

The programme is one of the department’s initiatives to support the Strategic Plan of Agriculture and Agrarian Department 2016-2020. The programme also aims to expose agricultural companies as a lucrative business and to open opportunities for youths to invest in the ‘Contract Farming’ sector, particularly in the field of crop industry using high technology systems that can improve agricultural produce and provide good returns.

The programme is divided into briefing sessions and farm visits. Participants will be briefed on investment opportunities in the field of crop industry and financial simulations for agricultural companies using high technology. A briefing from Syarikat Gropoint Sdn Bhd, a company that will buy all the youth products later on in contract farming will also be held. Among the farms that will be visited are Ameenfarm Agrotech and Trading, RZ Prisma Enterprise, Econadi Agrobiz Company, DD Agrobiz and Kanglin Hydroponics Farming.

The programme seeks promote the participation of youths in the agricultural sector in contract farming to increase agricultural and export markets. In this contractual farming, agricultural entrepreneurs need to issue a certain amount of capital and focus on sustainable and quality production in accordance with the company’s standards which will buy and market all the agricultural products they produce.

This second session hopes to produce youths who are committed, progressive and productive agricultural entrepreneurs to contribute to the uptake of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the future.
