THE National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) and the Sports School yesterday morning signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will see the governing body of football in Brunei share its expertise with the school.

The MoU was signed at the NFABD House in Berakas in the presence of the NFABD President, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah; Minister of Education, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman; Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin; as well as senior officials from both ministries, Sports School and NFABD.

Apart from helping the school’s students train for competitions and prepare training programmes, NFABD will also share its technical services, expertise and other professional development resources.

It will start with an initial 14 Sports School students with a joint effort to scout for more students to follow.

“NFABD is responsible for the planning and implementation of football development programme in Brunei, and I am confident this MoU will produce more skilled players who will udergo better systematic training from a young age,” said NFABD Secretary General Roslin bin Suhailee.

“This MoU will also allow us to together scout for talented players to represent the national team in the future.”

The Sports School’s Principal, Matt Letham echoed Roslin’s comments, saying that he too hoped the MoU will be an avenue to create more national footballers.

Stating that the Sports School’s core value is to become a centre for sports and academic excellence, Letham acknowledged that the school will only be able to achieve such vision by partnering and utilising the expertise of local stakeholders such as NFABD.

The Sports School recently received a rebranding in which they were charged with creating a school that the finest athletes of Brunei would be proud to attend, and Letham said that yesterday’s MoU signing will help them achieve that goal.

“Both our institutions have a responsibility to nurture our most talented young players so they achieve their fullest potential, which may include representing the national team.

“With such similar goals, it is only natural that we work together – and that this has been formalised in this MoU to be celebrated.

“For our part, we know our boys will be catered for within the national set up and that our coaches will receive professinal development of the highest calibre – and for both these things, we are grateful,” said the principal.
