National flags distributed to students in Belait

FOLLOWING the previously held ceremony where 5,000 national flags were distributed to students in the Brunei-Muara, Tutong, and Temburong districts, the ceremony had continued its journey to the Belait District with the handing of the small flags to students being held at the Multi-purpose Hall of the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Religious School (SU PSBSOAS).

Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports with the Information Department; and in collaboration with the Islamic Studies Department (JPI), Ministry of Religious Affairs; the ceremony was aimed at instilling a sense of patriotism in lieu of the upcoming 34th National Day celebration, with the distribution of the small national flag symbolising solidarity, perseverance and loyalty towards the sovereign and country of Brunei Darussalam.

The guest of honour Captain (Rtd) Dato Paduka Abdul Rahman bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence presented the small flags to more than 450 students from Primary 4-6 of SU PSBSOAS.

Legislative Council (LegCo) members YB Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin, the Penghulu of Mukim Liang and YB Hanapi bin Mohd Siput, the Village Head of Kampong Labi I; as well as Acting Belait District Officer, Abdul Hazis bin Haji Ahad; Headmistress of SU PSBSOAS, Norazimah binti Haji Kahar; and the various head and senior officers from the various governmental department in the Belait District were also present.

The ceremony saw various videos showcasing the proper method of raising and flying the national flag, as well as several choir performances by the Wardah 2.0 choir group from Mukim Seria and by the students of SU PSBSOAS.

The ceremony was also an opportunity to showcase the various photography talents found among the students of SU PSBSOAS, as the guest of honour was able to present various prizes to their respective winners of the previously conducted ‘Upper Primary Patriotic Photography Contest’.

Haji Awang Wahyudin bin Haji Awang Ismail, an instructor from SU PSBSOAS, said over 450 students from Primary 4-6 were involved in the ceremony to help instil a sense of patriotism and pride in preparation for the upcoming 34th National Day Celebration.

“This is the first time this ceremony was held here, we hope to continue to conduct similar events like this in the future,” he said. “We hope that the students will be able to feel a sense of pride and joy in receiving the small flag as it represents the heart and souls of each Bruneian residents.”
