Defence and military cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and the United States was cemented through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation on November 29, 1994.
The bilateral cooperation encompasses professional exchanges, training and exercises. At the multilateral level, exchanges are conducted through interactions in Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training (SEACAT), Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) and the Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus).
The CARAT is an annual exercise conducted between Brunei Darussalam and the United States. The 23rd CARAT was held in November 2017 and the 24th exercise in the series is expected in October this year.
