BRUNEI Darussalam’s national para bowlers produced a clean sweep in the doubles’ events on the second day of the World Para Bowling Tour Series 2018 after bagging two gold medals at the Temasek Rifle Range Bowling Centre in Singapore.
The national para bowling athletes consolidated the set of gold medals with one gold and three silvers they won on the opening day to be among the top countries in the tournament.
Kamarul Ariffin bin Haji Abdul Ghaffar added the gold medal he won in the TPB2 division singles with another in the men’s doubles TPB2 and TPB2 division alongside his partner Saidin bin Haji Awang Damit.
The duo, which had previously enjoyed a one-two finish in the podium in the singles event, registered a total of 2293 pinfalls, well clear of the chasing pack, to win gold.
Fresh from securing silver in their respective categories on day one, the duo of Muhammad Jamary bin Danggat and team-mate Khairul Anuar bin Haji Abdul Ghaffar went one better with gold after winning the men’s doubles TPB1 and TPB3 division.
The duo recorded 1986 pinfalls with their strong showing in game five when they registered 213 points which catapulted them to glory.
The Brunei pair outshone their rivals from Korea and Japan, who took silver and bronze, respectively, with a scintillating display.
Brunei Darussalam para bowling coach Ahmad Athery Haji Abdul Samad hailed the performance of the athletes who were determined to give their best for the country.
“Today our para athletes were again in a very high spirit, motivation and determination to do their absolute best which later allowed them to finish with gold position,” said Ahmad Athery.
“Their physical and mental games are in top condition and hopefully they can perform again tomorrow (today) in the trios event.
“They also mentioned to me that since this is their first participation in this World Para Bowling Tour competition, they are very excited to perform their best as representatives of Brunei Darussalam,” he said.
Brunei Darussalam national para bowlers will return to the lanes today for the trios in the final day of the three-day competition.
More than 50 para bowlers from eight countries including hosts Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, descended on the city-state to vie for top honours in the singles, doubles, trios and masters.
